How does it work? 1. OREC develops (or purchases) renewable energy projects in partnership with schools, institutions, municipalities, and businesses and provides long-term
The City of Ottawa's energy portfolio consists of over 1,800 electricity and natural gas accounts across over 1,000 facilities and outdoor lighting sites, amounting to approximately 310 million kWh of electricity and 19.4 million m3 of natural gas consumption in 2023.
City staff benefited immensely from feedback and leadership provided by community stakeholders throughout the development of Energy Evolution: Ottawa's Community Energy Transition Strategy.
In 2016, 5.8% of community emissions came from electricity consumption, predominantly from the buildings sector. Approximately 92% of electricity consumed in Ottawa comes from zero emission sources (primarily from the provincial grid), with local generation contributing 17.4% of the zero emission electricity consumed via hydro and solar power.
To address this, Hydro Ottawa is undertaking a comprehensive modernization of the city's electricity grid. We know that meeting our city's growing energy needs, adapting to a changing climate, and supporting a transition to a carbon-free future requires more than just installing additional poles, wires, and substations.
