On a pitched roof, panels should not be installed above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney) and should project no more than 200mm from the roof slope or wall surface. On a flat roof the highest part of the solar PV equipment cannot be more than 600mm higher than the highest part of the roof (excluding chimney).

Should you put solar panels on a burning roof?

Often firefighters will ascend to the ridge of a roof to cut a hole and vent the smoke. Doing so provides a way for the smoke to exit a room and allow for a rescue operation. It takes enough bravery to scale the roof of a burning home, and putting solar panels in the way just increases the danger.

Do solar panels have to be set back from ridge line?

Source: Cal Fire Solar panels (photovoltaic arrays) must also be set back from the ridge line to allow for fire service roof ventilation at the peak of the roof. The amount of setback depends on how much of the roof is covered by the panels.

Can a solar panel slide off a roof?

A quick slide down a bank of solar panels and off the roof is likely just as deadly as braving the smoke-filled path through the house. To remove the chances of encountering such a dilemma, there has to be a safe path from the EERO to the edge of the roof.
