Solar power, as the most easily deployable clean energy source, has been key to supporting Ukraine in times of crisis, helping to maintain energy access amid disruptions. Solar power will be crucial for rebuilding the country, ensuring lasting energy security.
Estimates from the agency add that Ukraine needs to deploy around 24 GW of distributed PV before the end of 2030, alongside 5.6 GWh of BESS, to create a more decentralized and secure power system and achieve objectives featured in its national energy and climate plan. As of 2024, the country had around 7 GW of distributed solar.
The latter especially is key, as the build-up of solar PV in Ukraine from current levels to 14 GW by 2030 will require over EUR 4.39 bn, which will necessitate significant financing from both private actors as well as international 43 Energy Community Secretariat (2023).
Nonetheless, while Ukraine's technical potential for renewables, and especially solar PV is strong, the Ukraine Plan foresees only meagre additions to solar PV capacities until 2027.
