Bahrain World Trade Centre in Manama is the only skyscraper in the world to have wind turbines in its structure. It has two towers linked by three skybridges and is 240 metres high. Each skybridge has a wind turbine built and installed by Denmark's Norwin A/S.
Bahrain World Trade Centre's turbines are designed to generate 11-15 per cent of the building's power needs when running and have a capacity of 225kW each. However, they were not commissioned until April 2008, 26 months after the main building was completed.
The Bahrain WTC features an interesting shape of the buildings representing sails, that hold the winds which blows from the Persian Gulf. Built according to the design of British company Atkins, it has been necessary to introduce sustainability to the buildings.
The building includes the first installation of large-scale wind turbines into a commercial building. With initial inspiration taken from traditional Arabian wind towers, the idea that buildings could harness the onshore breeze from the Gulf and if designed correctly, deliver a renewable source of energy for the project was developed.
